Aussie Blake Minto crowned WBF International Super Lightweight Champ

Newcastle, Australia recently hosted a huge Promotion billed as ‘Detonation 9’ by Triple World Champion and Hall of Famer Jeff Fenech in partnership with Steel City Boxing.

Fenech was sitting ringside for the entire promotion commentating for the telecast that will be aired on Fox Sports Australia in the coming weeks.

Blake Minto who holds the WBF Australasian Welterweight Strap that he earned in his last outing against Eddie Dos Santos in an 8 round thriller at the same venue dropped down a weight division and had his hand raised in victory after a 10 round Unanimous Decision win over rugged Mark Sales of the Philippines to be crowned the new WBF International Super Lightweight Champion.

Sales was a late replacement for Sydney based New Zealander Anthony Brownlie who pulled out of the fight with injury. With 22 wins on his professional record, Sales certainly came to fight and would test Minto for the entire 10 round journey having his moments in each round but was ultimately outclassed by the young up and coming Australian who fought an intelligent fight against an always dangerous opponent.

The Australian was cautious but calculating throughout each round landing solid combinations to the head and body and ensuring he remained just outside the range of his crafty opponent who waited until the very end of each round to get on the front and become the aggressor with loaded shots, however, it was not enough to unsettle the patient and intelligent Aussie who remained very busy for the entire 10 rounds.

Official Decision – Minto def Sales UD10

“I have seen him fight a few times now and Blake Minto improves with each and every fight and his body attack should have been enough to put Sales away, but Sales is as crafty and tough as they come and has some weight in his punches too. Minto fought a smart fight and has a big future in front of him” said WBF Snr Vice President Paul Saunders who was ringside as the WBF supervisor for this Championship bout.
