Aussie Blake Minto crowned new WBF Australasian Welterweight Champ

A packed venue in Newcastle, Australia witnessed a bout definitely worthy of a WBF Championship Title. Blake Minto took on fellow Australian Eddie Dos Santos in a much anticipated and gruelling 8 Round encounter for the vacant WBF Australasian Welterweight Title. A Championship bout that saw both fighters cut and neither combatant down. The bout was definitely the fight of the night on the 8 bout program billed as ‘Detonation 8’ by the Promoters - Steel City Boxing.

Dos Santos was a willing and certainly worthy opponent for the highly regarded Minto and his reputation was most definitely warranted. Dos Santos the taller of the two combatants had a very big height and reach advantage over Minto and had his moments throughout the fight landing some solid shots including a stinging right cross in round 3 that opened up a cut over Minto’s left eye. Credit must go to Minto’s corner who kept the cut under control for the remainder of the bout. Although Dos Santos landed some solid shots, they appeared to have little effect on the battle tested Minto who was relentless in his pressure style attack from the opening bell.

Minto the new champion was switch hitting in every round creating angles which made it hard for Dos Santos to settle and counter. Non stop pressure and volume of punches thrown by Minto was going to be hard to deal with for any opponent that he faced on the night. His style, work rate and level of fitness reminded officials in attendance of a bygone era of 15 round fighters.

Emotions ran high once the official scores were read out with Minto dropping to his knees after having his hand raised in victory and then rose to greet and embrace his elated corner men.

With Minto’s record improving to 8 and 1, he insists that he will be stepping up with each fight and is looking to defend his Australasian Title sooner rather than later.
