Ali Elrich Claims WBF International Super Middleweight Crown in Highly Anticipated Rematch

In the highly anticipated rematch between New Zealander Chase Haley and undefeated Australian Ali Elrich, Elrich has been crowned WBF International Super Middleweight Champ in Sydney, Australia 9th November 2019.

Their first encounter for the vacant WBF International Super Middleweight title was a fight of the year candidate in Australia that ended in a draw after 10 gruelling rounds and the return bout was almost a carbon copy of the first. An absolute war of attrition between these two challengers that had the capacity crowd at the Whitlam Leisure Centre in Sydney, Australia on their feet for the entire bout.

From start to finish Elrich and Haley went toe to toe and traded furiously for most of every round. Sitting ringside, the sound of crisp loaded punches landing again and again and seriously not believing that either man was hurt and even looked like going down. Just one of those fights that you would pay any amount of money to witness. Although not a televised bout, television executives would have been watering at the mouth to show such a contest.

Chase Haley vs Ali Elrich

Can seriously not write a round for round take on this fight as all 10 rounds were action packed with Elrich happy to sit on the backfoot patient and counter and the New Zealander on the front foot looking to load up and then get in close….

After a point was deducted from the New Zealander in the 5th for a low blow, part of most of the latter rounds were fought in a phone booth. It was edge of seat viewing, unable to anticipate what will come of the exchange when the phone booth door finally swung opened.

The old and often used boxing terminology 'Granite Chin' can be best used here for both combatants.  Both were the recipients of absolute bombs throughout the entire fight that could have and should have stopped the other and most certainly would have stopped lesser men. The pace never slowed for the entire 10 rounds as was the case in their first meeting.

The latter rounds saw the Australian Elrich a little busier than earlier rounds and Haley was a little more content to enter the phone booth again and again and stay on the inside attacking the body. Had he have stayed at range and picked his shots and moments as he had shown in earlier rounds, the decision may have been different.

We take our hats off to two very willing, very skilful and extremely tough combatants but there could be only one winner. The 3 Judges at ringside saw the fight this way in favour of the winner by Split Points Decision -   97-95  97-93 and 94-95
