A Busy Month for The WBF North American Region

What a busy month it has been for The World Boxing Foundation North American Region. On Saturday May 13th, we sanctioned two fights that were action packed until their conclusions. In Michigan, it was James “Lights Out” Toney taking on Mike “Lightning” Sheppard in a WBF World Heavyweight Title fight. In Pennsylvania, it was Derrick “Take It to the Bank” Webster taking on Frankie “Freight Train” Filippone in a WBF Super Middleweight International Title fight. This card also provided a WBF Woman’s USA Jr. Regional Title to Ikram Kerwat as her opponent wasn’t able to compete.

James “Lights Out” Toney

James “Lights Out” Toney(77-10-3) started out slow verse the game Mike “Lightning” Sheppard(24-20-2). Shepherd’s aggressive style pushed the action as he landed several strong
over hand rights. Toney being the veteran he is, relied on his defense early while studying the openings. Throughout, Toney had to use his jab to set everything up. And in the sixth round, it happened; Toney put the “lights out” in Mike Sheppard. This contest was believed to Toney’s last fight, but he did mention the name Shannon Briggs. So I guess, we’ll have to wait and see. And the new, WBF Heavyweight World Champion. James “Lights Out” Toney.

Derrick “Take It to the Bank” Webster(23-1) fought a tough competitor in Frankie “Freight Train” Filippone(22-5-1). Early in this fight, it was give and take with both fighters landing clean shots that scored. Filippone brought the more bruising style, while Webster boxed and displayed great ring generalship. Webster’s jab was the key in this fight because it kept Filippone at the end of punches causing his nose to bleed from the rapid fire. In the sixth round, Filippone was taking a lot of punishment, but he survived the round. The seventh round was a different story as Webster put his punches together knocking down Filippone twice awarding him the fight. And the new, WBF Super Middleweight International Champion, Derrick “Take It to the Bank” Webster.

Ikram Kerwat(7-1) secured the WBF Woman’s USA Jr. Regional Title. With her well skilled background, her athletic stature, and her training provided by Roy Jones Jr., Kerwat will definitely be a force in her division.
