Coyle Wins!

11 July 2011

Mayo’s Henry Coyle won the vacant WBF Light Middleweight title at the Royal Theatre in Castlebar, Ireland on Friday night when he beat Italy’s Elio Cotena on a technical decision.

Coyle had the edge for the 5 rounds boxed with both men working hard from the opening bell. Ultimately though it was a deep cut above Cotena’s eye, a result of an accidental clash of heads in the 5th round, that brought an abrupt end to the proceedings.

During the interval following the 5th round and following advice from the ringside doctor referee Oliver Duetschler waved the contest off. And with Coyle ahead on points after the 5th round he was awarded the title on a technical decision.

The 2000 strong crowd at the grand Royal Hotel, already elated following an excellent win by Patrick Hyland against Fabrizio Trotta in a feather-weight undercard contest, erupted with delight at the outcome.

There is a strong passion for boxing in the region and with tg4.tv streaming the show live across the internet Castlebar will have been placed firmly on the boxing map in Ireland.

Credit must go to Gerry Coyle and Brian Peters Promotions for putting on a top class gala of boxing and raising the profile of boxing throughout Ireland.

As for Coyle Jnr, the new WBF World Champion, he now moves on to 16-2-0, and the prospect of some fascinating contests in the near future.
