WOMEN’S boxing will take centre stage next month when local promoter Siphatho Handi brings four title fights involving women to the Orient Theatre in East London.

There will be six championship fights on the bill, including the much-awaited men’s SA junior-bantamweight bout between Themba Joyi and Miniyakhe Sityata.

Three of the fights will be for World Boxing Foundation belts, and of the three national titles up for grabs at the celebrations, two will be for vacant South African women’s titles.

Dean “Pit Bull” White took the vacant WBF USA welterweight title with an upset eight round majority decision over “Rockin” Ryan Belasco last night in front of a packed house at Dover Downs Hotel and Casino in Dover, Delaware. In the co-feature, “Mighty” Mike Tiberi demolished Brad “Firecracker” Hill with a brutal body attack that dropped Hill for the count at 1:32 of the opening round of a scheduled six round middleweight bout. Capital City Promotions was the promoter.

IN 2003 when Francisco Lorenzo was at the height of his popularity, Mlungisi “Shark” Dlamini was a youngster boxing four- rounders at Plettenberg Bay in Western Cape, and Pinetown Civic Centre and Mandini in KwaZulu-Natal.

For his 16th fight, Dlamini, who is from Esikhawini, was matched against a veteran named Ivan Orlando Bustos for the WBF lightweight title.

Ryan Belasco (11-2-2, 3 KOs), of New Castle, Delaware will fight in his first main event on Friday, July 24, when he faces West Virginia’s Dean White (14-10-1, 7 KOs) in an eight round junior welterweight bout at the Rollins Center, inside Dover Downs Hotel and Casino in Dover, Delaware. At stake will be the WBF USA belt. Belasco is unbeaten in his last seven bouts. There will be seven additional bouts on the show, including an appearance by rising Delaware middleweight “Mighty” Mike Tiberi (9-1, 4 KOs), and a women’s bout featuring New Jersey’s Elizabeth Sherman (1-0, 1 KO) taking on Bernadette Hume, of Toronto. The promoter of “Delaware’s Young Guns” is Capital City Promotions.

BONGANI “The Cyclone” Mwelase will fight Hungarian Attila “The Viper” Koceves for the vacant WBF junior middleweight title on August 7.

The Commonwealth Games gold medallist whose candour makes him every sports writer’s favourite boxer to talk is promising to end the fight early.

“Koceves will taste a stoppage defeat. This is no prediction but a certainty,” Mwelase said.
