Being offered an opportunity to fight for the vacant WBF super middleweight champion early this year did not only revive William “Dynamite” Gare’s career, but it also changed his life for the better.

Once regarded as being over-the-hill, the 33-year-old Gare is currently the most talked-about fighter in South Africa following his second defence of the WBF crown against Jindrich Velecky from Czech Republic in Bloemfontein last Friday.

An impressive Gare gave Velecky a thorough boxing lesson throughout the 12 rounds en route to winning via a deserved unanimous points.

It’s hardly a boxing hotbed but on November 30th Egypt hosts its very own world title fight when Britain’s Danny Williams clashes with Frans Botha for the vacant WBF heavyweight championship. The fight takes place in a specially erected arena next to the ‘Great Pyramids’ and a unique designed hi-tech lighting display will illuminate the Egyptian monuments providing a magical backdrop for the ‘Dual in the Desert’.

British writer Graham Pearman caught up with one of the co-challengers, Frans Botha, who gave his thoughts on the fight and also how he sees the state of the current heavyweight division which he describes as a “shambles”.
