Oldham based Mongolian Choi Tseveenpurev retained his WBF World Featherweight Title with a fourth round stoppage win over Nikoloz Berkatsashvili at the Tara Leisure Centre in Shaw on Sunday.

The 35 year-old, who was making the first defence of the title, was always too strong and skillful for his Georgian challenger. Berkatsashvili was floored three times before referee Micky Vann waved the fight off after 1.55 of the fourth session.

On Friday at the Emnothweni Casino in Nelspruit, Mlungisi “The Shark” Dlamini, 15-0-1 (9), annexed the vacant WBF Lightweight belt in brutal fashion, canvassing Ivan Orlando Bustos, 21-10 (3), four times before stopping the Argentine fighter at 2:25 in the fifth. It was a sterling performance by Dlamini who shelled Bustos with a withering two handed assault that never let up.

Also at Emnothweni Casino, WBF Super Bantam kingpin Zolani Marali, 17-1 (11), had much more of a fight on his hands as he faced opponent Hevinson Herrera, 10-2-1 (6). Marali controlled the action from the outside for the first half of the bout, but the Colombian visitor rocked the champion with a riveting right hand that had Marali in trouble and on the floor in the sixth round.

After that Marali played it safe, tying up Herrera whenever the tourist got on the inside and managed to avoid getting caught again by the heavy handed South American, cruising to a points victory.

cleveland-corder-prince-badi-ajamu-resized.jpgYesterday I ran into Prince Badi Ajamu when I was at The Green Valley Hotel and Casino interviewing Cleveland Corder about his Retirement Fight. I asked the Light Heavyweight World Champ if I could catch up with him after I was done talking to Cleveland Corder. Of course The Fighting Prince was more than happy to share some of his time…

The first question I asked him, I have been wondering about for a long time. I asked, “last month when you faced Craig Cummings in Olive Branch, Mississippi why do you feel like you dominated such an experienced fighter?”

Ajamu stared at me with a blank and serous look and said, “I am on a new mission. I want to prove to the world how serious I am about my fighting. Every single day I drive myself like I am preparing for a World Championship fight and I know that constantly driving myself for greatness has given me an advantage over any other fighter.”

“Well Prince those are some pretty powerful words. Who do you hope to face in the ring next,” I asked.

“I don’t think it matters who I fight next but I want to fight a Top Ten Eliminator to make me a mandatory World Championship Challenger. I fell that this would be the next positive step forward in my career,” The Fighting Prince Stated.

The Fighting Prince already currently holds two World Championship Titles in the Light Heavyweight division which lead me to my next question. “How does it feel to hold two World Titles again,” I asked him.

“To be honest, it feels great! Now I just want to go out there and how fun it is to perform well and defend them,” Prince said with a grin.

”Your fans would like to know if you faced Roy Jones Jr. again if you would be able to defeat him. If you feel that you can, how do you know,” I asked next.

“Absolutely, because I now understand that his experience is what beat me the first time. I now have a little more wisdom than I have in the past. In other words, I know what I need to do in order to defeat Roy Jones. This gives me an overwhelming advantage,” Prince stated with sheer confidence.

“You have spent a month or so in the Las Vegas Valley area. People are curious if you intend to start training here indefinitely,” I questioned.

“I love Las Vegas man! I would love to train here for as long as possible. Las Vegas has always had a ton of potential for a professional fighter to advance his career. There are always superior athletes hanging around in Vegas. I also love the people here. They are always so friendly and positive, these people are always the best to surround myself with,” Ajamu said with true enthusiasm.

“Since you started training here in Las Vegas, have you been focusing on anything different,” I asked.

“Funny you would ask and yes I have been training in new areas. I want to build more insight and intangibles. This is what makes the difference between your average challenger and a true champion,” The Fighting Prince stated.

“Do you have the ability to unify all the belts in the Light Heavyweight division,” I asked next.

“I know I do. It’s the main reason why I’m still in the fight game. That is my intention. I want to win every single title in the Light Heavyweight weight class,” Prince Badi said.

“Why would you say you have been successful this far and has there been one person that has had the most influence on you,” I asked Prince.

“I always make it a goal to surround myself by people of my choosing, who support me and have faith in my abilities as a fighter. The person who has inspired me the most is the Creator. My faith in the Creator has kept me going. He is immutable and my faith in him is true,” Ajamu finished.

“One more question. You have gained a huge fan base, can you reflect on that a little bit,”

“Well I grew up in New Jersey so of course most of my fans are from there. I have lots of fans outside of New Jersey who appreciate my fighting skills and personality. The last time I fought in Boise, Idaho the fans loved me, I would love to go back and give them a good show because I fell like I owe it to them. I want to win for all of my fans! I just want to thank them for sticking by me and supporting me over the years,” The Fighting Prince Badi Ajamu concluded.

The Prince has always been a positive person. I can honestly say that I have never seen him so full of enthusiasm. I think he is really ready to take on the boxing world. Fight fans should look forward to watch him in action soon and will enjoy his quest to become the ultimate Light Heavyweight professional fighter.

john-taranto-bj-flores-mick-croucher-olive-branch-ms-resized.jpgBJ “El Peligroso” Flores successfully defended his WBF World Supercruiserweight Title against Patrick “Punchin Pat” Nwamu on 2 March 2007 at the Qwest Arena in Boise, Idaho bringing his career record to an impressive 19-0-1 (12). Flores won a convincing twelve round unanimous decision against Nwamu (117-111, 117-111, 116-112 ) in this co-promotion staged by Silverhawk Championship Boxing and Knockout Promotions. While Nwamu fought well and provided a challenge for the incumbent champion he ultimately could not match the power of his opponent or score enough points to claim the title when the decision went to the scorecards. Officiating for the WBF on the night was US Supervisor, Derrick Spicer of Missouri.

“Bomber vs KO Kidd 9 March 2007″ Robbie Bomber Peden is set to light up the Brisbane sky like a Las Vegas neon sign when he brings a touch of the strip to downtown Chandler Arena. Normally accustomed to fighting in Caesar’s Palace and the MGM Grand, Bomber is returning to his hometown to repay his fans and hopefully resurrect his American fight plans.

Peden is set down to fight Ranee Ganoy over twelve rounds at Lightweight. This is being billed as a Vegas style fight night but with the KO power that these two fighters possess someone is going to have their lights turned out.

In his previous fights if Ganoy wins he wins by KO – 86% of his victims have went down for the full ten seconds.

Tickets are available for Peden vs Ganoy at Ticketmaster on 136 100 or at:
http://www.ticketmaster.com.au/
Tickets also available at the door at Chandler Arena.

What a month February was …

Matt Powell survived for long enough against Mohamed Elomar to eventually win the Australian Featherweight Title by DQ. This fight was not one for the purists. It had low blows, repeated fouls and points deducted. So very similar to the first fight except this time we have a result.

The undercard proved to be VERY competitive with some upsets and some close decisions to keep the massive crowd entertained.

Stay tuned to Channel 31 Brisbane and Melbourne for all of the action over the next few weeks.
