“Jackhammer” Clinton Johnson brings professional boxing back to Traralgon when he takes on Queensland’s James Chan for the WBF Asia Pacific Lightheavyweight title on 24 March.

Clinton Johnson is the reigning Victorian Super Middleweight champion and in this fight will step up a weight division to take on the tough Queenslander James Chan.

Clinton has had some great fights over the last couple of years and he received the award for “KO of 2005” when he knocked out New Zealand’s Brendon Jones with a single right hand. In November last year Clinton Johnson won the Victorian State Super Middleweight title by beating Luke Moloney on points in a sensational fight. With contrasting styles, as Clinton Johnson is tall, rangey and a good boxer and James Chan is short and rugged with a good punch, this is a perfect match up of boxer vs. puncher, but in this case the boxer can punch just as well.

Clinton has also dedicated his fight to the late Ross Tomkins and Jock Park, two former Bairnsdale amateur champions who were trained by Bairnsdale Amateur Boxing and Youth Club trainers Neil Reynolds and Ian Hedley.

This will be a night not to be missed as the undercard is equally exciting featuring some great fighters.

Pradeep Singh will take on Thailand’s Somchai Simlum. Singh is unbeaten in 12 fights with 8 KO’s. Simlum is a journeyman with no wins from 4 fights but has fought Kane McKay, Daniel Geale, Jamie Pittman and Daniel “Porky”Lovett. He is a rough Thai and has lost all his fights by decision except one.

Former Commonwealth Welterweight and current WBF Intercontinental Junior Welterweight champion Fatai “Kid Dynamite” Onikeke is also fighting on the bill. Onikeke is the most exciting fighter in Melbourne with 19 wins from 21 bouts with 16 KO’s. Onikeke takes on Mike Wasperart who has 14 wins from 24 bouts.

Unbeaten Light Welterweight prospect Heath Ellis will also be in action against Jim Savage of Queensland. Ellis’ record shows 3 wins out of 3 fights with 2 KO’s.

This show is selling very fast so if you want a great weekend away to see some great fights book in early.

Dutch heavyweight Richel Hersisia, 28-1 (22 KO’s), last weekend moved his training headquarters from Berlin to Rottweil in south Germany, accompanying his trainer Torsten Schmitz, who also has to prepare former European champion and WBO heavyweight title challenger Luan Krasniqi. Fittingly, promoter Universum Box-Promotion has added the hard-punching Dutch and Benelux champion from Den Haag to their ‘Champions Night’ on March 17 at the Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle in Stuttgart, Germany, which is headlined by the clash between Krasniqi and Axel-Schulz-conqueror Brian Minto. Manager Olaf Schroeder, whose company Fight Production has handled Hersisia from the start of his career in 2001, confirmed the appearance of the ‘Dutch Sonny Liston’ in a scheduled 8-rounder: “We are looking to fight someone who can give Richel much more of a test than his last opponent (Adenilson Rodrigues, W KO 2). This is not about boxing someone who has a hot name and produces storylines, like with the Krasniqi v Minto fight, but rather about a solid sporting contest.”

Apparantly, despite sharing a trainer, Hersisia and Krasniqi will not train or spar together in Rottweil. This is emphazised by the fact that the 32-year-old Curacao-born Hersisia has been given his own sparringpartners by Universum Box-Promotion. He again works with current WBF world champion Albert Sosnowski, 39-1 (23 KO’s), from Poland. The pair knows each other since long, due to the close relationship of Schroeder with Sosnowski’s manager/promoter Krzysztof Zbarski and the German said: “Albert is really a great guy, he didn’t hesitate for one minute when Richel asked him to come over. We definitely appreciate his help, which is not to be taken for granted, because Albert, whose corner I worked many times at the beginning of his career, is a very serious fighter himself.” An announcement about Hersisia’s opponent is expected shortly, but trainer Torsten Schmitz was non-chalant about that issue: “We don’t really care. Richel has big hopes, works hard and wants to win, so it doesn’t matter who will be put in front of him.

South African sensation, WBF Junior Featherweight kingpin Zolani Marali 16-1, faces the toughest test of his career when he trades punches with the dangerous Colombian, Hevinson Herrera Cambra in Nelspruit South Africa on Friday March 9.

The aggressive Colombian Junior Featherweight champion holds an impressive record of 10-1-1 with 6 KO’s having already drawn with the world rated Feider Viloria in a fight many thought should have gone the Colombian’s way.

Marali, whose last outing was a comprehensive points victory of French Bantamweight champion Jean Marie Codet, will be for a torrid time if he allows the brawling Herrera to dictate the pace.

On the undercard, nominee for prospect of the year, Munglisi Dlamini 13-0-1 with 9 KO’s gets a crack at the WBF lightweight title recently vacated by Australian champ Allan Luxford.

Dlamini takes on the cagey and experienced Ivan Orlando Bustos from Argentina with a record of 23 – 9 – 3 with 12 KO’s.

A tough test for Dlamini against a man who has already challenged four world champions.

Once again a superb looking bill put on by World Sport Promotions, promoter Thinus Strydom who is fast becoming the top promoter in South Africa.
