R.I.P JOHN WHEELER

The WBF and the Australian boxing fraternity, sadly regret the passing of one of their Leading International Officials, Mr John Wheeler. He passed away on the morning of the 11th November at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.

John formerly of Fremantle, Western Australia, travelled to Melbourne to start a colorful boxing career under the guidance of the legendary trainer Ambrose Palmer. John later officiated for many world boxing sanctioning bodies and became a committee member of the Melbourne based World Boxing Foundation, he officiated in the USA, Thailand, Philippines, North Korea, New Zealand and many other destinations.

John was a very respected and loved person and will always be remembered for his kind nature and lifelong contribution to boxing. John was 75.

In his third year as president, Croucher has witnessed a steady growth worldwide but openly admits to being surprised at just how far the sanctioning body has come since he took over the reigns.

It started off on November 4 and carried on right through until the early morning of Guy Fawkes. Rodney Berman’s Golden Gloves staged five world title fights on the bill at Emperor’s Palace, Johannesburg, South Africa.

The first WBF fight was between the current cruiserweight champion, Gyorgy Hidvegi, of Hungary matched against the current South African cruiserweight champion, Danie Venter. Venter boxed smartly in the first couple of rounds using his long left jab to perfection, while Hidvegi stalked his opponent like a lion ready to pounce. And pounce he did at the end of round five.
